However we look at it, our course was set long before we ever set out.

Our path twists between the countless turns we left behind and those still waiting to become choices.

Some hurdles we’ll clear with courage. Others we’ll quit on and go around.

But remember this: every step of the way, until the last choice is made, before every fear and every hardship, we’ll ask the reflection that looks back at us from the future:

“Will I want to be the person who overcame the fear in front of me?”

We’ll open our hearts wide and listen to our echoing voice, calling to us:

“Come. Come to the place that’s right for you.”

Because fear’s job is to create heroes.

So get moving. It’s never too late. Don’t let yourself slip through your own fingers. Don’t end up regretting the person you never became.

Go out and be

a hero.

No matter how you look at it, we’re set in stone from the start.

Our winding road is paved with countless paths not taken and others that might still open up.

We’ll jump obstacles like badasses. We’ll bail and take detours.
But here’s what matters—when you’re staring down your choices, before any fear or bullshit,
ask your future self looking back:
“Do I wanna be the motherfucker who faced this shit head-on?”

Open your heart wide and listen to that voice screaming:
“Come. Get your ass where it belongs.”

’Cause fear’s whole fucking job is to make heroes.

So move—never too late to start—don’t let life pass you by. Don’t die regretting you never showed up.

Get out there and be,
the hero.

No matter how we look at it, our path is predetermined.

Our winding path is paved with countless turns we haven’t taken, as well as those that may yet become possibilities.

We’ll boldly leap over obstacles and problems. We’ll give up and take detours.

But it’s important to remember, as we approach the end of our journey, and in the face of every fear or difficulty,

to ask our reflection from the future:

“Will I want to be the person who overcame the fear standing before me?”

Let’s open our hearts wide and listen to our inner voice, calling out to us:

“Come. Come to the place that’s right for you.”

Because fear’s role is to create heroes.

So move forward—it’s never too late—don’t let it pass you by. Don’t regret not having been there.

Author’s Note, or Whatever:

These days, in the iPhone generation, a generation where how popular you are comes down to how many followers you’ve got on Instagram; days when if you’re not on Facebook, you don’t exist; a generation of screens and hunched backs that has lost the meaning of love, a moment in time when anything fast and on demand beats what nature designed and hahahahaha just kidding, you suckers, you actually thought that was gonna be the vibe here.

“Wait, what? You’re not going to preach your bullshit at us?”

I’m really going to try not to, I swear. Because we’re surrounded by sons of bitches who shove their crap down our throats every fucking day. And a book, in my opinion, should give us a break. A book is supposed to be a friend, and everybody knows a real friend is a mix of: hate this guy with me, eat pizza with me, you’re driving tonight, and be as fucked up as me and don’t leave me.

Because I prefer a storyteller who talks like me, like a friend, and doesn’t drop a fucking “methinks” on me halfway through, because the second he does, it’s wait, bathroom, and I’m out the door and home watching midget porn, just to scrub off the rancid taste. Yup, this is first-of-its-kind literature: literature for people who don’t read books and are into other stuff, like sex, drugs, and YouTube videos of fat people falling over. Mom, if you’re reading this then put down the book because it’s not for you, I’m serious quit it.

Chapter: The Backstory Dry Hump

This part’s optional, and I don’t recommend it—you can skip it. Anyway, there’s a summary at the end of every long paragraph, so you don’t drown in my bullshit.

Not everyone takes it well when I go, “Hey, babe, there are dragons now and people have superpowers. Just like that.”

So feel free to flip back to this page every now and then to figure out what the hell I’m talking about. And no shame if you do—it just proves you’re a retard.

Right now, in this iPhone generation where your worth is measured in Instagram followers; where no Facebook means you’re a ghost; this hunchbacked screen-addicted crew that forgot what love means, where instant gratification beats nature’s plan and—hahahaha just kidding you bunch of faggots, you thought this was gonna get deep?

“Wait, what? You’re not gonna mindfuck us here?”

I swear I’ll try not to. ’Cause we’re drowning in assholes mindfucking us 24/7. Books should be chill spaces. A book should be that homie who’s down to: hate on people with you, split a pizza, help jumpstart your shitbox car, and stay messed up with you through everything.

’Cause if you’re telling me a story, talk like we’re kicking it—none of that “methinks” bullshit. The second you pull that, I’m suddenly needing the bathroom, then I’m home watching midget porn to bleach my brain.
Yeah, this is next-level shit—books for people who hate reading, who’d rather be fucking, getting high, or watching fat bitches eat pavement on YouTube.. Mom, if you’re reading this, put the book down ’cause it’s not for you, I’m dead serious stop already.

The author’s thoughts or something:

These days, in the age of the iPhone, a generation where your popularity is directly linked to the number of your Instagram followers; days when if you don’t have Facebook you don’t exist; a generation of screens and hunchbacks, that has lost the meaning of love, and a moment when everything is instantly available and fast takes precedence over what nature intended, and hahaha, just you jerks, you think that’s going to be the thing now.

A book is supposed to be a friend, and everyone knows that a real friend is a mix of: hate someone with me, eat pizza with me, take your car out, be as messed up as me, and don’t leave me.

Because I’d rather have whoever’s telling me a story tell it in my own words, like a friend, and not throw in an “I think” in the middle, because that’s probably exactly when I’d tell him, “Hold on, I’m going to the bathroom,” and run home instead, just to watch dwarf porn to get rid of the bad taste in my mouth. Yep, this is the first book of its kind—literature for people who don’t read books and love other things like sex, drugs, and videos of fat people falling on YouTube. Mom, if you’re reading this, put the book down because it’s not for you—I’m serious, enough already.

What’s the deal with All Is Possible?

First off, there’s nothing wrong with believing that anything is possible. But All Is Possible also means I write this thing however the fuck I please. You know that guy who was born with water wings, whose hippie parents refused to have them surgically removed, and who now owns a cinema chain and is mega-famous? Yeah. That’s because anything is possible. Even that.

There are limits, though. I want to take you along for the ride, so when I stretch them, you’ll see where I’m going. More or less.

TL;DR: Around here, anything’s possible—as long as it stays on the right side of cool.

The setting

The story takes place in a world a lot like ours. It all kicks off in a big city, right in the middle of everything. Here, too, everyone’s glued to their iPhone while bitching about everyone else glued to theirs; every ice cream shop has that left-hand section, flavor purgatory, full of stuff nobody ever orders, like lemon sorbet and tahini; bitches out doing a SlutWalk; vegans who couldn’t organize a boycott if you handed them the list; hot girls posing by the water next to a unicorn float, all for the ’gram; government corruption, obviously; monopolies making damn sure nobody else on the planet ever gets rich or gets ahead; and, of course, hordes of bearded hipsters in backward caps losing their shit over some celebrity chef’s overpriced bullshit.

TL;DR: It’s our world, give or take. Just a few extra things we don’t have. It’d be fucking wild if we did.

But—and it’s a big but, as you can see—our history’s a little different when it comes to what actually existed. Back in the day, we didn’t just have knights gallivanting off to the Crusades and that whole mess. We had fucking dragons, orcs, elves, fairies—an endless fucking parade of legends, and every last one of them was all too real.

They live among us, more or less. No need to get into it—everybody knows. Anyway, there’s Google, and you can stream The Lord of the Rings.

TL;DR: Our history’s built different—Ashkenazim, Mizrahim, elves, orcs, and a metric ton of other bizarre shit. Completely different races, each one highly developed—in all the right places. Now picture that lineup in porn for a moment—oh my God.

  1. GeslaagdDe zwembandjes moeten operatief verwijderd worden, zoals in het origineel; de absurde grap blijft

What’s the Deal with this Book

All is Possible

First off, “anything’s possible” is basic shit, but All is Possible means I write it however my dick feels. You know that dude born with arm floaties whose hippie parents wouldn’t gently remove them? Now he owns theater chains and he’s famous as fuck? Yeah—all is possible, even that.

There’s limits though ’cause I’m crafting an experience here, so boundaries stretch in kinda logical ways.

Bottom line—no limits to possibilities here. Everything’s chill within the vibe.

World Background

Story’s set in a world basically like ours, starting in some metropolitan shithole. Same deal—everyone’s glued to iPhones while bitching about iPhone zombies; ice cream shops still got those left-side flavors no one touches (lemon sorbet, tahini); slutwalks; vegans failing at activism;
basic bitches posing at water features for dead unicorn IG posts; government corruption on easy mode; monopolies gatekeeping success; and beardy hipsters in backward caps simping for Eyal Shani’s overpriced toast.

Basically our world, just with bonus crazy shit that doesn’t exist (yet).

But—and this is a Titanic-sized but—our history’s different. Back in the day, we didn’t just have crusader knights and bullshit, we had fucking dragons, orcs, elves, fairies—the whole legendary RPG party.

They’re all still around, living among us. Don’t overthink it—everyone knows. We’ve got Google and LOTR streaming like normal people.

Point is, our history’s wild: Ashkenazis, Mizrahis, elves, orcs—the whole pornographic melting pot. Think about that pornographically for a sec—ohmygod.

  1. Mislukt‘Operatief verwijderen’ werd “gently remove”, en de grap over de operatie gaat verloren
  2. Mislukt‘Eenhoorn-zwemband’ werd “dead unicorn”; het beeld is niet te volgen
  3. MisluktDe Israëlische naam blijft staan; de grap vereist daardoor context die Amerikaanse lezers mogelijk missen.

What’s the deal with the book

Anything Goes

Let’s start with the fact that it’s totally standard to believe that “anything is possible,” but “anything goes” also means I can write this however the hell I want. You know that guy who was born with webbed fingers and his hippie parents didn’t want to have them surgically separated, and today he owns a chain of movie theaters and is mega-famous? Yeah, that’s because anything goes—even that.

Now, there are limits because I want to take you on an experience, so the boundaries will be stretched in a more or less understandable way. So that’s it.

In short, there are no limits to what’s possible here. And everything can be within the bounds of what’s cool.

Background on the World

The story takes place in a world quite similar to ours, and begins in a large, central city. Here, too, here, everyone is glued to their iPhones and complains about people who are glued to their iPhones; in every ice cream shop, the flavors on the left side are the ones no one ever chooses, like lemon sorbet and tahini; protests by sluts; vegans who don’t know how to bring about change effectively; hot chicks looking down near a water source and a unicorn horn on Instagram; government corruption—easy; monopolies that are very careful to ensure that no one else in the world gets rich or succeeds; and, of course, plenty of bearded hipsters in backward hats who are crazy about Eyal Shani’s nonsense.

In short, the world is relatively the same as everything that’s happening here. Just with a few more things that don’t exist—and what madness it would be if they did.

But—and this is a big “but,” as you can see—physically, our history is a bit different. In our “once upon a time,” there were not only knights on crusades and other nonsense, but also fucking dragons, orcs, elves, fairies, and an endless array of legends that aren’t cool at all.

All of these more or less live among us. No need to get into it. Everyone knows, and at worst, there’s Google and streaming “The Lord of the Rings.”

In short, our history is different: Ashkenazim, Mizrahim, elves, orcs, and a whole lot of other nonsense. Different, advanced races of humanity—just think about it from a pornographic perspective for a second—omg.

  1. MisluktDe boektitel verandert in een andere uitdrukking, waardoor de woordspeling rond de titel verloren gaat.
  2. MisluktDe ‘zwembandjes’ werden vingers met zwemvliezen; de absurde grap wordt een medische aandoening

Powers. Some people have them, and those people are called biots. And our hero’s one of them—because it’d be a real shit sandwich if he wasn’t. It’s the usual stuff, really—fire, electricity, ice, air, the whole elemental control thing. Telekinetics can move shit with their minds. Mentalists can crawl inside your skull, hotwire your brain, and drive you like a stolen car.

I know, it sounds dorky as hell—painfully try-hard. But people here have fucking superpowers. So call me a honey-glazed turkey sandwich. Go wipe your nose on a cactus for all I care—because our hero shoots fucking lightning from his hands.

See, we didn’t burn a guy at the stake for sorcery while rotten-toothed whores of old chucked tomatoes at him—we took him in. He got the cool kids’ seat at the back of the school bus, kicked off his shoes, and had room to grow. Generation after generation, we got the hang of bending the elements to our will. And we kept getting better at it.

And if you’re thinking, Ha, so somebody out there must have the power to tie their shoes really well—no. That’s not how it works. Ha, what about farting really loud? Surely somebody can—will you stop? Nobody has that power. It’s not cool, and it’s fucking obvious. Ha, drinking really fast— I hope you step in shit.

TL;DR: Superpowers. Some people have them. Like blowing someone’s head clean off with a fucking fireball. Or growing a flower out of thin air to give a woman on a blind date.

The history:

It all started five hundred years ago, when this smart, strong leader named Avner showed up. Avner the Brother, they called him—back then Avners and brothers were thick on the ground, because there were no condoms. Anyway, he says, “Let’s get some microscopes and gunpowder going.” And that’s how the technological revolution got rolling—the one that changed everything.

The problem was, most of the other races didn’t exactly take kindly to all these changes and inventions. They were like, “Oh great. What now?”

So Avner the Brother organized a summit without even using Facebook. He invited the leaders of every kingdom and tribe to the Mount of Souls, this hippie mountain where you go to talk things out. Fighting just isn’t done there.

Some people have powers. We call ’em BIOTICS. Our hero’s one—what kinda lame protagonist would he be otherwise? Standard elemental shit: fire, lightning, ice, wind. Telekinetics moving shit with their minds. Mentalists hijacking thoughts.

Sounds nerdy as hell? Sure. Also—people here can shoot fucking lightning from their hands. So call me honey-glazed deli meat and go fuck yourself with a cactus, ’cause our boy’s packing lightning from his hands.

See, in our timeline, we didn’t burn “witches” with rotten teeth while throwing tomatoes. They became legit—sat in the back of buses barefoot and got space to grow.. With each generation, we leveled up our manipulation skills and kept pushing them further.

And if you’re thinking: pfft, I bet there’s guys who can burn shoes real good... nah, that shit don’t work. Hah, definitely got dudes whose

superpower is farting like a champ... fuck outta here. Doesn’t exist, not badass and obviously fake. Hah “change fast”... may you step barefoot in dogshit.

Bottom line—some people pack serious heat, like launching a fucking fireball point-blank. Or conjuring flowers mid-air for some arranged marriage speed date.

Backstory:

This all kicked off 500 years back. Up pops this stone-cold brilliant motherfucker named Avner. They called him Avner the Brother ’cause back then every third asshole was named Avner and families bred like rabbits—no condoms. Dude waltzes in like “Alright fuckers, let’s crank out microscopes and gunpowder.” And just like that, the tech revolution flipped the whole world upside down.

Problem was, all our shiny new toys royally screwed every other race sideways. They’re all standing there like “Well this fucking sucks now what.”

Avner throws this big summit thing—no Facebook RSVPs obviously. Rounds up all the kings and tribal chiefs at the Mountain of Souls, basically nature’s hippie peace summit

where you talk shit without throwing hands ’cause the vibes are sacred.

Some people have powers. They’re called biots. And our hero is one of them, because what a bummer if he weren’t. Basically, what’s going on is the usual stuff: people who control the elements, like fire, electricity, ice, and air. There are telekinetics who can move things from a distance, and mentalists with the ability to enter someone’s mind and control it.

On the one hand, it sounds nerdy and super corny, but on the other hand, the people here have fucking superpowers. So, like, call me honey-glazed turkey pastrami for all I care and go blow your nose on a cactus, because our hero can shoot fucking lightning bolts from his hands.

It has to do with the fact that in our history, instead of calling someone a sorcerer and burning them while old-school whores with rotten teeth threw tomatoes at him, so he just became accepted, sat in the back of the bus, took off his shoes, and was given a place to grow up. Over the generations, we’ve advanced and developed the ability to manipulate, and we’ve continued to develop it.

And if you’re thinking: Haha, I’m sure there are people with powers to tie their shoes really well... well, no, and that won’t work. Haha, I’m sure there are some whose superpower is farting really loud—that’s their power, haha... Give it a rest already. No, and it’s not cool, and it’s obvious. Haha, drink up fast... Anyway, he came along and said, “Hey guys, let’s mess around with some microscopes and gunpowder.” And that’s how the technological revolution that changed everything began.

The problem was that all these changes and inventions seemed weird to most of the other races in the world, and they were like, “Well, what now?”

But none of the kingdoms or tribes wanted to join him. Or move forward. They figured they’d already peaked. Thanks, but no thanks.

Then Nelson—that son of a bitch, that slut, that Nazi, that uptight little Bible-thumper—came riding in on his giant Siberian dragon. He went up to Avner the Brother and grunted, “You. Me. Fight. There. Later.” Translation: over at the spot where fighting’s allowed, not on the mountain where it isn’t. Then he shaved the mountain bald—yes, the hippie mountain, that one—and slaughtered the King of the Elves, who’d sided with humanity, along with a bunch of other big names.

Loads of creatures threw in with Nelson against humanity. The major kingdoms sat it out, which left humanity fighting alone just to keep from being wiped out.

TL;DR: Five hundred years ago, Uncle Avner invented technology and went full Herzl on everyone. A man with a dream. Before Nelson and all that bloodshed, Uncle Avner had already pitched his big idea to the other races: “Let’s build technology together.” They said no. Then, out of nowhere, someone decided a simple “no” wasn’t going to cut it and started killing. Nelson. Because of course it was Nelson. That guy talked a whole bunch of creature kingdoms into turning on us. So it was us versus the whole damn world.

The battle that followed was the biggest the world had ever seen. Humanity banded together against Nelson, and then the slaughter really began. They called it the Great War.

In the middle of it all, there was this enormous bang. That was the anti-technology generator kicking in. Their device, not ours. It shut down all human tech across half the world. Exactly half. We ran. Because without technology, humanity was nothing.

Avner the Brother died in that war.

TL;DR: Humanity, led by Avner the Brother, went to war with the rebel creatures, led by that elf prick Nelson. Halfway through the fighting, the creatures’ device kicked in. Humanity’s hair dryers stopped working. Their guns too. Their cannons. Everything they’d ever invented. So humanity ran. The creatures won. Avner the Brother died.

His pitch? “Listen up dickheads—team up, invent bullshit, stop dying from the common cold.”

But none of these inbred kingdoms wanted to play ball. Perfectly happy living like it’s 10,000 BCE.

Enter Nelson—fuckin’ Nelson the backstabbing Nazi cocksucker—riding his Siberian dragon like he owns the place. Tells Avner “Save it for the battlefield, bitch.” Then flash-freezes the whole peace mountain solid and ices the Elf King (who was team humanity) plus half the VIPs.

Next thing you know, half the creature kingdoms jump on Nelson’s genocide train. Big players stay “neutral”—code for spineless—so humanity’s stuck fighting solo just to not get wiped out.

TL;DR—Uncle Avner invents the industrial revolution 500 years early and goes full Herzl. Pitches his “let’s science together” bullshit to every mythical kingpin—gets told to pound sand. Then Nelson—fuckin’ Pure Evil Nelson—decides “no” means “kill everyone.” Turns half the fantasy UN against us. Now it’s Team Humans vs. every monster in the phone book.

What follows? Biggest clusterfuck in recorded history. Humanity circles the wagons against Nelson. Total war—assembly line carnage. They call it The Great War.

Halfway through this shitshow? Earth-shattering fucking kaboom. That’s when the anti-tech Generator kicked in. A device the creatures built—not humans—and it blocks any human technology from working across half the world. Literally splits it right down the middle. Humanity retreated from battle. Without tech, they were nothing.

Avner the Brother died in the process.

Long story short—war between humanity led by Avner versus rebel creatures led by that elf bastard Nelson. Mid-war, the creatures’ device activated, and suddenly humanity’s hair dryers, guns, cannons—all their inventions—stopped working. They ran. The creatures won. Avner bought it.

Basically, he came to say, “Okay, guys, let’s take over the world together, invent stuff, and stop dying from the common cold.”

But none of the tribes or kingdoms wanted to join him, to move forward and evolve. They preferred to live as if it were the end of the world.

And then Nelson showed up—Nelson, the son of a bitch, the slut, the Nazi, and the hardliner—he arrived on his giant Siberian dragon and said to Avner, “Come on, let’s fight a little longer, right there.” At the site of the fight, so to speak. Then he razed the mountain—even though it was the mountain of the beautiful ones—and killed the King of the Elves, who was on humanity’s side, along with other important people.

Many of the creatures joined Nelson against humanity. The great kingdoms remained neutral, and humanity was forced to fight alone to avoid extinction.

In short, David Avner invented the technology 500 years ago, and Herzl emerged. He took his vision to all the other kings of the creatures in the world and told them, “Let’s develop technology together.” They told him no. And out of nowhere, someone appeared for whom “no” wasn’t enough. And he started killing. Nelson—and he’s the bad guy. The evil Nelson convinced many of the kingdoms of creatures to turn against humanity, and then they went to war: humanity against everyone else.

The battle that ensued was the greatest the world had ever seen. Humanity banded together against Nelson. And a war of mass slaughter began. They called it “The Great War.”

In the middle of the battle, there was a massive boom-crash. That was the moment the anti-technology generator began to work. A device built by the creatures, not by humans, which prevents the existence of any kind of human technology in any form whatsoever in half the world. It’s literally a 50-50 split. Humanity retreated from the battle. Because without technology, they were nothing.

My brother Avner was killed in the process.

In short, there was a war between humanity, led by my brother Avner, and the rebel creatures, led by Nelson the Thousand, that slut. In the middle of the war, the device the creatures built started working, and humanity’s hair dryers, guns, cannons, and everything else they’d invented stopped working, so they fled, and the creatures won, and Avner the Brother died.

The Generator: anywhere it reaches, human tech just dies. Pistol, Bluetooth speaker—dead. That’s how that half of the world ended up nearly picked clean of humans and tech.

TL;DR: The creatures built a device called the Generator, and now tech doesn’t work in half the world.

Which brings me to the Wall.

The Separation Wall: a wall around the other half. Real original, I know.

Beyond the Wall, human tech just… doesn’t. So we live on the right side—the side where everything’s great and we’ve got scratch cards and Camel cigarettes.

After the war, the Wall was supposed to be humanity’s clean slate—finally some room to grow and get somewhere without anyone sticking their nose in our shit. So they built it hundreds of meters high and cut the world in two.

And what’s beyond it? That’s where shit gets interesting. The possibilities? Endless, colorful, and pretty fucking insane.

TL;DR: Half the world’s walled off, along the edge of the Generator’s reach. Out there: all the kingdoms, all the madness, and all the holy fucking shit.

The Balancers: Okay, so here’s the deal—when the world goes completely to shit, the universe goes all Libra on us and does some cosmic horoscopology thing.

Once in a damn blue moon, it spits out a pair—a human and a Siberian dragon (we’ll get to that)—hooks them up with fucking Kim Jong-un-level powers and hands them one job: restore the balance between good and evil.

That last pair ended the Great War and murdered Avner. We haven’t seen a pair since.

TL;DR: Good and evil get out of whack; the universe spits out a human and a dragon to fix it.

Dragons: They exist. Yep. I hope you know what a dragon looks like. Right, so. There are four kinds, and they go from weak-ass to badass: green, blue, red and black.

The Generator: Device built by forces beyond The Wall. Completely disables any human tech across half the planet. Doesn’t matter if it’s a gun or Bluetooth speakers. Keeps that half pure from human contamination or tech nonsense.

TL;DR—tech stops working in half the world thanks to the creatures’ little toy: The Generator.

The Wall—There’s a goddamn wall encircling half the world.

Cross it? Human tech becomes useless. So we’re stuck on the “right” side—where everything’s on point and we’ve got wiener and Camel cigarettes.

Post-war, The Wall was supposed to be our fresh start—a future free of interference, full of growth and progress. This thing’s hundreds of meters tall, dividing the world in two.

What’s beyond? Infinite possibilities,
crazy colorful and completely fucking insane.

Bottom line—massive wall around half the world at The Generator’s edge. Behind it? All the kingdoms and madness and pure chaos.

The Balancers: So the story goes—when cosmic balance gets fucked,
the universe drafts a tag team—one human, one Siberian dragon (we’ll get there)—to fix things. Every few centuries, the universe spits out this dynamic duo with Kim Jong-un levels of ridiculous powers and one job: reset the balance between good and evil.

Haven’t seen a pair since the last ones ended The Great War and killed Avner.

TL;DR—world’s moral compass goes nuts? Universe creates a human-dragon cleanup crew.

Dragons—Yeah, they’re real. I’m assuming you know what a dragon looks like. There’s four types: green, blue, red, black—in order of how badass they are.

Green? Basically a scooter with scales.

The Generator: A device created by forces on the other side of the wall. It prevents any kind of human technology from working in half the world. It doesn’t matter if it’s a gun or a Bluetooth speaker. And so, it left that half free of human civilization or technological progress.

In short, technology doesn’t work in half the world because of a device the creatures built—the Generator.

The Separation Wall—there’s a wall surrounding half the world.

And beyond the Wall, human technology doesn’t work. So humans live on the right side of it, where everything’s on fire and there’s Winner beer and Camel cigarettes.

After the war, the Wall will give us the chance for a fresh start, for a future free of disruptions, for growth and progress. The wall was built hundreds of meters high, and it splits the world in two.

What lies beyond it is very interesting: the possibilities are... endless, colorful, and pretty fucking crazy.

In short, there’s a wall surrounding half the world, at the edge of the Generator’s influence. Behind it lie all the kingdoms, the madness, and the locked-up Dink.

The basics: Well, the story goes that when something major happens in the world, the universe chooses a cosmic duo—like a horoscope—a team of a human and a Siberian dragon (we’ll get to that) to set things right.

Every so often, the universe spits out a duo like this and grants them “Kim Jong-un-level” powers, with one absolute mission: to restore the balance between good and evil in the world.

We haven’t seen a duo like this since the last one, who ended the Great War and killed Avner.

In short, when good and evil become unbalanced in the world, the universe spits out a human-dragon duo to fix it.

Dragons—so they exist. Yes. I hope you know what a dragon looks like. Well, here’s the thing. It turns out there are four types: green, blue, red, and black, in order of relevance.

Blue is a Mercedes dragon.

Red is a tank dragon.

And black is an Apache helicopter. Or a fighter jet.

Dragons can talk, and they live with us as pets. They’ve got pretty advanced language skills, and their brains are wired a lot like ours. Like ours, only retarded. Four-and-a-half-year-old retarded. Black dragons are the exception. They’re every bit as sharp as us. That’s what makes them so dangerous. They can all breathe fire, but in Western countries people cut the cartilage out of blue and green dragons’ throats so they can’t. Sort of a safety measure.

Let’s take a closer look at Siberian dragons. They’re the smartest, strongest, fastest dragons out there. And give them their due: they kept the peace with humans for thousands of years. Until the Great War. Since then they haven’t been speaking to us—full kindergarten sulk, like most races and creatures in the world. They don’t live among us—or even on our side of the wall, for that matter. Their tribes keep to the wild side, and they’re dangerous as hell.

TL;DR: Black dragons, a.k.a. Siberian dragons: strongest, coolest. And just as smart as us. They live on the other side of the wall.

You’ve got AIDS now.

Language tip:

D(a)zen — a man with a hard life who gets up at the crack of dawn every morning, even on Saturdays. At five a.m., Dazen drinks black coffee with his friend Moti, then heads off to fix things. He’s got paint stains on his shirt and shoes. Get a flat tire and he’ll pull over to help—fixed before you can thank him. His own beat-up gray pickup belches smoke, and he couldn’t give a shit. Chances are he’s your friend’s uncle, or your uncle’s friend.

Nothing interests Dazen. Not the stuff you care about, anyway. He works to make a living, to put bread on the table for Chiba—his wife—and the kids. He couldn’t define “marinade” to save his life, but he knows what hard work tastes like, and that’s all that matters. He packs a trunk like he’s playing Tetris: every inch accounted for. Hand him your keys and, with that ridiculous efficiency of his, he’ll cram twice as much into it.

It’s Dazen, not Da’azen. That extra a is one more syllable than he’s willing to deal with. Fuck it.

Blue? Your dad’s midlife-crisis Mercedes.

Red? Battle tank with wings.

Black? Attack helicopter or fighter jet.

Dragons can talk and live among us like weird pets. Have insane language skills. Their brain structure’s similar to humans—just like a developmentally delayed 4-year-old—except black dragons who match our intelligence. All can breathe fire, but blues and greens get their flame glands removed. Safety precaution for civilized living.

Important note on Siberian dragons: smarter than the rest—strongest, fastest dragon breed. Had peaceful relations with humans going back thousands of years. Until The Great War. Now they hate us as much as everyone else. Don’t live among us or our side of The Wall. Extremely dangerous—you’ll find their tribes roaming the wild side beyond The Wall.

So yeah, the black Siberian dragon? Top-tier badass.
Strongest. Breathes fire. Smart as humans. Lives beyond The Wall.

Congrats, you just caught AIDS.

Street Dictionary:

Dazen—Wakes at ass o’clock daily, Saturdays included. Chugs black coffee with his boy Moti before fixing the neighborhood. Permanent paint stains on clothes and shoes. Will patch your flat tire in two seconds flat. Drives a gray pickup that belches smoke and fucks hard. Either your friend’s dad or your uncle’s drinking buddy.

Gives zero fucks about anything that matters to you. Works to feed his wife (Chiba—the Dazen’s better half) and kids. Couldn’t explain marinade but knows hard work’s flavor—that’s his whole deal. Packs cargo like NASA. Turns your trunk into clown-car storage through sheer willpower.

Spelled Dazen,
not Daazen—that extra ‘a’? Waste of his goddamn time.

Blue is a Mercedes dragon.

Red is a tank dragon.

And black is an Apache helicopter or a fighter jet.

Dragons can talk and live with us like pets. They have highly developed language skills. Their brain structure is very similar to that of humans—specifically, that of a 4½-year-old with developmental delays—except for the black dragons, who are as intelligent as we are. All of them can breathe massive flames, but the blue and green dragons have the cartilage in their throats that enables this removed. It’s a kind of safety mechanism in Western countries.

A special note on the Siberian dragons: They are more intellectually advanced than the rest and are the smartest, strongest, and fastest of all dragon species. To their credit, they have maintained peaceful relations with the human race for thousands of years—until the Great War. Since then, they’ve been at odds with us, like most races and creatures in the world. They do not live among us or on our side of the Wall. They are extremely dangerous, and their tribes can be found on the wild side of the Wall.

In short, the Black Dragon—the Siberian one—is the strongest and most fiery. And as intelligent as we are. They live on the other side of the Wall.

You have AIDS now.

Linguistic advice:

D(A)Zen—He has a tough day; he gets up at 5:00 a.m., even on Saturdays. He drinks black coffee with his friend Moti, then goes out to fix things. He has paint stains on his shirt and shoes, and he’ll stop to help you with a flat tire and fix it in a flash. He has a beat-up gray pickup truck that spews smoke like crazy, and he couldn’t care less. A lot of the time, he’s your friend’s uncle or your uncle’s friend.

He doesn’t care about anything. He doesn’t care about the things you care about. He works to make a living, so that his wife (Chiba, Hadzen’s wife) and kids have bread on the table. He doesn’t know the definition of “marinade,” but he knows what hard work tastes like, and that’s all that matters. He knows how to load up like a rocket scientist. He’ll turn one trunk into two, thanks to his efficiency.

It’s spelled “Dzen,” not “Dazen.” Because he has no patience for that “A.” He doesn’t care about the “A.”

Bukraf—That physical/spiritual cringe when something’s weird-awkward, not cute-weird. Like your dad suddenly using hair gel or your mom French-kissing you and you’re weirdly okay with it. Think:

Pre-Pre-Chapter 1

Hey, I’m Dizzy. Short for Denzel. Yeah, weird as hell. My parents are from England, so obviously they named me after an Ethiopian movie star.

How do I describe myself…? Okay, honestly? I’m a normal kid. I think. I don’t know if I can still call myself a kid, but I do anyway. I’m weird enough that it kind of fits. I’ll be walking down the street with someone when I suddenly lose it completely, howling with laughter because I’ve pictured them slipping on a banana peel and cracking their skull open. Then an ambulance pulls up packed with mimes, and they keep dropping the poor bastard off the stretcher until one of them cracks his own skull too, so another ambulance pulls up for him. Also packed with mimes. Typical.

I’m not the sharpest pencil in the box. On the rare occasion I actually come off sharp, I’m one of those freshly sharpened pencils whose point snaps off the second you press down, and that little snap feels like your guinea pig just died. I’ve never been good at anything. Except that one time in eleventh grade, at Ronen’s class party—you know, that Indian kid—when I won that stupid game by kicking a wad of gum right onto his neighbors’ window. They called the cops. I had a panic attack in the bathroom and threw up.

I’m average height. Normal face. Like a traffic light. Not that I look like one. I just mean a traffic light is about as ordinary as it gets. Dark hair, a tiny mohawk, kind of broad. I look nothing like my parents. The apple didn’t fall far from the tree—it just turned out to be a Lego brick. They always said someone must’ve got in there somewhere. Then, before it could turn into a whole thing, they’d say the gods did it or something. Which gods? Didn’t matter, as long as it wasn’t Itzik the newspaper delivery guy.

I don’t have any siblings. Because having siblings is gay. Also because I don’t have any. Not because it’s gay, I mean. It’s not even that gay. I only said the siblings thing because I’m jealous of people who have them. As a kid, I was always bored at home. Nobody bullied me or beat the shit out of me after school. So one time I babysat the neighbor’s kid and got way too into pretending he was my little brother. We were roughhousing, and I accidentally bashed his head against the corner of a table. Then an ambulance came. No mimes. I never babysat him again.

I only tell my parents I love them on special occasions—birthdays or right before a flight—because they might die. Otherwise it’s just weird as hell.

I’ve got ADHD and I can’t lie. Shit combo. You need to lie at least a little, or nobody believes you really have ADHD.

Pre-Pre-Chapter 1

Yo, I’m Dizzy. Short for Denzel. Yeah, weird fucking name—blame my British parents who named me after some obscure Ethiopian actor.

How to describe myself... Okay, look, I’m basically a normal dude. Well—normal-ish. Still call myself a kid sometimes ’cause I’m a fucking weirdo. Classic me move: walking down the street in flip-flops, then losing my shit laughing because I imagined some guy slipping on a banana, cracking his skull open, then an ambulance shows up full of mute clowns who keep dropping him off the stretcher until one clown also cracks his head and needs his own clown ambulance

I’m not the sharpest tool in the shed. And if I ever seem like it, I’m more like one of those pencils that keeps snapping its tip mid-sharpening—like your dick just flatlined. Never been good at shit, except that one time in 11th grade at Ronen the Indian’s house party when I won the gum-kicking contest by launching a wad straight through his neighbor’s window. Cops got called, I had a full-blown panic attack in the john and yakked my guts out.

Height? Average. Face? Basic traffic light vibes—not that I look like a fucking stoplight, but you get what I mean. Dark hair with this sad excuse for a mohawk, built kinda wide. Definitely not my parents’ kid—more like some piece-o-Lego that fell under an apple tree. Their official story? Some god just yeeted me into their lives. Which god? Fuck if I know—just not Itzik from the newspaper stand.

No siblings. ’Cause siblings are gay—not that I have anything against gay shit, I’m just jealous. Childhood was boring as fuck—no one to beat my ass after school. Once babysat this neighbor kid and really committed to the whole “little brother” fantasy—we wrestled and I accidentally spiked his head into a table corner. Ambulance showed up (clown-free, tragically) and that was the end of my babysitting career.

Only tell my parents I love them during milestone events—birthdays, pre-flight goodbyes (in case the plane eats shit). Otherwise it’s just awkward as hell.

Pre-Pre-Chapter 1

Hi, I’m Dizzy. Short for Denzel. Yeah, it’s super weird—my parents are from England, so they named me after an Ethiopian movie star.

How do I describe myself... Okay, honestly, I’m a normal kid, I think. I don’t know if I can call myself a kid, but I do because I’m weird. It’s pretty typical for me to be walking down the street with someone and then start laughing uncontrollably because I pictured them slipping on a banana peel and cracking their head open, and then an ambulance shows up with a bunch of silent clowns who keep knocking them off the stretcher until one of them cracks their head open too, and another ambulance with clowns arrives for them.

I’m not the sharpest pencil in the box. And if for a moment it seems like I am, then I’m one of those sharpened pencils whose tip falls off and it feels like your eraser is dead. I’ve never excelled at anything, except in 11th grade, when there was a class party at Ronen the Indian’s house and I won by kicking a piece of gum through his neighbors’ window. They called the police, and I had a panic attack in the bathroom and threw up.

I’m of average height. My face is normal. Like a traffic light. I don’t really look like a traffic light, but a traffic light is very ordinary. Dark hair, a tiny mohawk, and I’m relatively broad. I don’t look anything like my parents. A Lego cutout under an apple tree. They always said someone got shoved in between them, and so the whole thing wouldn’t turn into a big deal, they just said it was the gods or something. They don’t know which gods—the main thing is that it wasn’t Itzik, the paperboy.

I don’t have any siblings. Because having siblings is gay, and also because I don’t have any siblings—not because it’s gay or anything. I only said that because I’m jealous. When I was little, I was always bored at home, and no one bullied me or beat the crap out of me after school. Once I babysat my neighbor’s kid, and I really got into the whole “he’s my little brother” thing—I got into a fight with him and accidentally banged his head on the corner of a table. Then an ambulance showed up—without any clowns—and I stopped babysitting him.

I only tell my parents I love them on significant occasions like birthdays or before flights—in case they might die—otherwise it’s just super weird.

I have ADHD and I don’t know how to lie. It’s a combo that’s right in your face. Because you have to lie at least a little for people to believe you have ADHD.

Otherwise you actually try your hardest—and end up succeeding. So fuck me, I actually pulled it off. Twelve long fucking years of trying my hardest, and I finally came out the other end of that foul camp they call school. It’s got one specialty—social trauma—and the method is simple: smash your character apart, put it back together, repeat. And I only got through it because I can’t lie for shit. Whenever I try, I get weird as hell—like, “That guy definitely collects flies and fingernails” weird.

Where am I in life? Pretty much nowhere. By day, I work a sensible job at a clean energy plant. Then, late on random nights, the question sneaks up on me again: what do I actually want? I never have the guts to answer, let alone change anything. Every time that question comes up, a little part of me dies inside. And time keeps passing. Another month gone.

And the truth that actually matters is the one that hurts the most. And I… I’m a coward. That’s the truth. I haven’t given myself the life I wanted. Not really. I watch the world move on and time race past while I stand still, making the same mistake over and over: I take the second-best thing, the easier thing, because the thing I should actually do feels like too much right now—knowing full well it’s going to land me somewhere bad for me. Every time.

What comforts me is knowing I’m not the only one. We all do it to ourselves, one way or another. We just don’t have the guts to choose differently.

How many dreams end up ditched by the roadside—deflated, broken, forgotten—because in the one life we get, we weren’t brave enough to listen to our hearts? And on top of all that, I’m scared to death of crickets. I’m not joking. Death.

But something’s happening. Something’s boiling, way down deep. Pressure building. Ready to blow.

Otherwise you’re out here trying legit and somehow fucking succeeding. Congrats dickhead, you survived the 12-year-long trauma summer camp that keeps rebuilding your personality like a shitty Lego set. All because when I lie, I turn into the human equivalent of a dude who collects toenail clippings.

Where am I at? Nowhereville, population: me. Days I clock in at the clean energy plant like a functioning adult. Nights? That’s when my brain goes “Hey dipshit—what about YOUR dreams?” but I’m too chickenshit to answer. Every time that thought hits, another piece of me flatlines... while the clock keeps ticking.

Our deepest truth is also our sharpest pain. And me? I’m a grade-A coward. Haven’t built the life I actually want—just coasting. Watching the world move while I make the same safe, shitty choices—always picking option B because option A scares me too much.

Comforting part? Knowing we’re all doing this dance.

How many dreams got curb-stomped because we weren’t brave enough to chase them? Meanwhile I’m over here with a crippling cricket phobia—dead serious, full-body terror.

But lately... something’s stirring. Some weird fucking energy bubbling up.

Otherwise, you really try your hardest and end up succeeding. So fuck it, I finally fucking succeeded at that shitty summer camp they stick you in for 12 years, which only causes social trauma while it breaks you down and rebuilds your character over and over again. All because when I try to lie, I get super weird—like, “He must collect flies and fingernails.”

Where am I in life? Pretty much nowhere. In the morning I work a sensible job at a clean energy plant, and when it’s late—in the middle of random nights—I remember to ask myself what I really want, without the courage to give myself an answer or change anything. Every time that happens, I die a little inside... and my time just keeps passing.

Our greatest truth is also our greatest pain. And I... I’m a coward, and that’s the truth. I haven’t given myself the life I wanted for myself—not really. I see the world moving forward, time flying by, and I stay behind, making the same mistakes—doing the second thing I’m supposed to do, knowing it will take me to a place that isn’t the best for me, because I don’t feel like doing the first thing; it’s a little too much for me right now. Always.

What’s comforting is that I know I’m not the only one. That everyone does this to themselves in some way because we don’t have the courage to choose to be different.

So many punctured and shattered dreams lie forgotten by the wayside, because in the only life we have, we weren’t brave enough to listen to our hearts.

Now, aside from all that, I’m also terrified of crickets—scared to death. I’m not kidding. Death.

But something is happening. Something is starting to stir inside me.

Pre-Chapter 1 — The Awakening

Half a tray of lukewarm, sad-looking pizza sits in front of me like a bad decision I’m about to make again. I stare at it, dead-eyed, then lean over to grab the bong off the table. I pack the bowl, just to feel something, to kill the boredom and put my problems on mute.

Click. The flame catches. I inhale and watch Game of Thrones. Plop. My head drops, and the room starts spinning, nausea tagging along for the ride. Minutes pass. My gut hurts, but I still want another slice. Maybe I’ll heat it up in the oven… Nah. I’d have to get up for that.

Halfway through a mouthful of mushroom pizza, something twists inside me. My face contorts. Feels like a bomb’s gone off in my gut. I’m still trying to work out why. A sob tears out of me, mouth still full of pizza. Then a wet snort. Another. Inside, I’m screaming, but the sound jams in my throat. What squeezes past the food is a thin, shaking whimper. My stomach heaves. Hard no. “Bleurgh! Bleurgh-hhh!” My body lurches toward the ashtray, and a gob of chewed-up pizza splats into it.

Round two hits. Cheese and Coke erupt, splattering into the ashtray and all around it. I haul myself toward the bathroom. Lose my balance. Slam into the living room cabinet. Framed pictures and knick-knacks tumble to the floor. They belonged to someone who didn’t need them anymore. Plastered against the cabinet, smeared with my own spit and vomit, I beg for help through the drool and bits of puke that dribble out with every panicked breath.

“Bleurgh-hhh!” My stomach hurls up whatever’s left, painting the family photos. Especially the one of me with Mom and Sam—the blue dragon Dad got for his retirement. Sam was still small and cute the day they brought him hooooome—aaahhh… “Hhha…! Bleurgh!” Another spray coats everything—even those pointless little figurines. They mean nothing. Just like me. Fuck. I can’t. Every day I wake up in the same place and end up right back there, trying to feel something different through that fucking bong. Frying every nerve ending I’ve got, getting as fucked up as I can. Nothing means anything.

All your friends from high school, from middle school—they’re smiling, getting married, moving on. Together. And I’m alone. No ambition. Nothing I’ve achieved. Nothing to look forward to. I belong in the trash. I make it to the bathroom, wrap my arms around the toilet and scream into it.

Pre-Chapter 1—Awakening

Half a lukewarm pizza box and a bong sit in front of me. My face feels like a corpse. I lean down to grab the bong off the table and fill my skull—just to feel something, drown the boredom, shove down the problems.

Click! The lighter sparks and I inhale. My eyes track the Game of Thrones episode playing. Fwoop! My head drops. Dizziness hits with a wave of nausea. Minutes pass, stomach hurts, but the skull wants another slice. Maybe I’ll grab one... nah... gotta stand for that. And then, mid-bite of mushroom-laden cheese, something twists inside me and suddenly my face contorts as a bomb detonates in my gut.
Uncontrollable crying erupts from my stuffed mouth. Involuntary gags and internal screams echo. My stomach rebels. BLARGH! BLARGH-HEHH! My body lurches toward the ashtray, ejecting a chewed-up slice-o-pizza chunk.

Round two arrives—cola and melted cheese aggressively painting the ashtray’s surroundings. I drag myself toward the bathroom. Stumble into the living room cabinet. Pictures and figurines of that ugly-ass vase no one needed anyway meet the floor. Face smeared on the cabinet, begging for help through spit and vomit trails with each dramatic gasp.

“BLARGH-HEHH!” My stomach expels everything right onto family photos—especially the one with Mom and Sam, the blue dragon Dad got for retirement. Back when he was still tiny and cute, the day they brought him home... HEHHH...! HARGGH! The spray coats everything—useless decor and me, equally meaningless. Fuck... I can’t. Every morning I wake up in the same shithole, chasing numbness through this fucking bong, torching my senses until nothing matters.

All your high school pals, middle school buddies—they’re smiling, marrying, succeeding, together. Meanwhile I’m alone. No goals. No purpose. No future. My landlord should toss me out with the trash. Keep crawling to the bathroom. Hug the toilet. Scream into it.

Prologue 1—Awakening

Half a tray of lukewarm, pathetic pizza sits in front of me. A dead expression is etched on my face. I bend down to pick up the bong from the table and fill my head, just to feel something, to drown out the boredom and push the problems aside.

“Click!” The lighter ignites and I take a drag. My eyes follow Game of Thrones playing in front of me. “Plop!” And my head drops. Dizziness sets in, and with it, nausea. The minutes pass; my stomach aches, but my head wants another slice. Maybe I’ll put it in my mouth... no... I’d have to get up for that.

And just like that, right in the middle of a bite full of mushrooms, something churned inside me, and I found my face contorting as if a bomb were exploding inside my body, while I tried to figure out why—as uncontrollable sobs burst out of me with my mouth full. Involuntary snores and internal screams echo. My stomach isn’t having it. “Baa! Baa-ah!” My body lurches toward the ashtray, and a chewed-up slice of pizza is spat into it.

Round two hits, and cheese and Coke spill violently into and around the ashtray. I drag myself toward the bathroom. I lose my balance and crash into the living room cabinet. Photos and figurines of someone who no longer needed them make their way to the floor. I’m sprawled across the cabinet, begging for help, through the slime and vomit residue that drips with every hysterical breath.

“Bah-ha-ha!” My stomach sends up everything it can onto the family photos, especially onto one of me with Mom and Sam, the blue dragon Dad got for his retirement. Back then he was still small and cute, on the day they brought him homeee... “Ha-ha...! Aaaah!” A spurt covers everything and those meaningless statues, just like me. Fuck... I can’t. I wake up every day in the same place and go back to the same place, looking to feel something different through this fucking bong while I burn out all my senses, getting as high as possible, and nothing makes sense.

All your friends from high school, from middle school—they’re all smiling, getting married, succeeding, together. And I’m alone, with no ambition. No fulfillment. No hope. Someone needs to throw me in the trash. I head to the bathroom, go in, hug the toilet, and scream into it.

Chapter 1 — First Rain

Rain hammers the car roof. Thunder roars. Outside, the storm is throwing a full-blown tantrum. Sunlight barely claws through the gray sky and slips between the tall buildings. On the windshield, raindrops come and go, battling the squeaky wipers, while the heater rattles away in the background.

I’m at a red light, stuck in traffic on my way to the factory. I think I’m still plopped out of my skull right now. Whatever happened to me yesterday was a whole new category of fucked up.

“…about the storm over the city, Yaron?” the radio blares. Please, somebody just knock me the fuck out.

“Yes, Keren. The city is blanketed in clouds and rain is pouring down. This change in the weather originated beyond the Wall and could not have been predicted. We all hope the storm passes quickly. I switch off the dying radio and roll up to the plant’s parking barrier, an hour late. My window grinds its way down, and there’s Nati, the guard, peering in. Waiting there, as always, with that pleased little smile. Fuck knows why. How does he keep that up day after day? What’s the difference between us, really? Neither of us planned on ending up here. We both figured we’d be somewhere else by the time the future finally showed up. I’m a parking lot guard just like him—minus the guarding, minus the parking lot, plus a slightly bigger paycheck. Another guy leaving his mark on the world. In invisible ink.

“Hey, Dizzy. How’s it going?” Nati doesn’t wait for an answer. “See this? Where the fuck did this storm blow in from? I’m telling you, you can’t trust the weather forecasters. They say one thing, and the exact opposite happens!” he complains. God, he’s a weird one first thing in the morning.

“Uh, Nati. Yeah… I’m really late. I just need to, like… get through the barrier.” The guard looks down, fumbling for words. His face falls. “I really didn’t mean to— Come on through, please. And sit with me for a puff on your way out. We’ll crank the panic up a notch!” He smiles sadly.

“Aw, come on, Nati. You’re an angel.”

“Nir.”

“Huh?”

“My name’s Nir. You’ve been calling me Nati for four years. I felt awkward correcting you. But then I read this book, and it made me rethink a few things—gave me the guts to actually speak up. I figured you should know. My name’s Nir. Because… that’s my name.”

What.

Neither of us says anything. The engine idles. Even that sounds embarrassed.

I have no idea what to say. “I promise I’ll call you Nir from now on.”

His face lights up. “Have a good day, Dizzy. And seriously, come sit with me sometime!”

I kill the dying radio and roll up to the plant’s parking barrier an hour late. Window cranks down slow—there’s Nati the guard peeking through with his usual delighted grin. God knows why. How’s he smiling like that daily? What’s the difference between us anyway? Neither planned to be where we are now—both hoped to be someone else in a future now past. I’m basically a parking attendant too, just without the booth or the uniform. Another hollow stamp on existence.

“Yo, Dizzi, what’s good? You see this weather? Storm came outta nowhere! Never trust meteorologists!” he bitches. Jesus fuck, morning people are psychos

“Yo, Nati. Yeah... I’m mega late, bro. Need to like... the barrier.” He looks down, fumbling for words with this pathetic expression, “Swear I didn’t mean to. Just let me in, yeah? And chill with me at the exit booth later—we’ll freak out together!” He forces a sad smile.

“Alright Nati, you’re an angel.”

“Nir.”

“Huh?”

“My name’s Nir. You’ve been calling me Nati for four years. Never corrected you ’cause it felt awkward, but I read this book that gave me balls to rethink shit, so... it’s Nir. ’Cause... that’s my actual name.”

What.

Awkward silence. Engine noise gets judgy.

Brain crashes: “I promise to call you Nir after this.”

His face lights up like I gave him a puppy, “Have a good one, Dizzi. Seriously—come sit with me later!”

Barrier lifts. I roll in.

Park, get out, head for elevators. Holy shit, four years with the wrong name. Fucking moro—-

“Skree! Skree! Skree...” Metal scraping concrete. What.

“Who’s there?! H-hello?” Wait a beat. “Speak up, asshole! You know this is exactly the shit that freaks people out?!” Voice cracks. Goosebumps, fuck.

“Skree! Skree! Skree...” echoes, fading toward some dark corner.

I turn off the dying radio and head toward the factory parking lot checkpoint, an hour late. The sound of the window slowly rolling down, and Nati the guard peeking out from the other side, waiting there as always with a satisfied smile—God knows why. How does he manage to smile like that every day? After all, what’s the difference between us? Neither of us planned to be where we are now; we both hoped to be somewhere else in a future that has become the present. I’m a parking lot guard just like him—just without the guard, without the parking lot, and with a little more money. Just another empty mark on the world.

“Hey, Dizzy, how’s it going? Did you see that? How did a storm just hit us like that? Believe me, you can’t trust the weather forecasters! They say one thing, and the opposite happens!” he complained. Man, he’s so weird first thing in the morning.

“Ah, Nati. Yeah... I’m just super late. I have to, like... the checkpoint.”

He looked down, searching for something to say with a sad expression. “I really didn’t mean that. Please, come on in. And sit with me for a smoke on the way out—let’s ramp up the panic a little!” He smiled sadly.

“Man, Nati, you’re an angel.”

“Nir.”

“Huh?”

“My name is Nir. You’ve been calling me Nati for four years. I didn’t want to correct you, but I read a book that really gave me the strength to rethink things, and I thought I should tell you that my name is Nir. Because... that’s my name.”

What?

Silence fell. The sound of the engine became awkward.

I didn’t even know what to say: “I promise I’ll call you Nir from now on.”

His face lit up with joy, “Have a good day, Dizzy. And you really do come over for Shabbat!”

The barrier went up. I drove in.

I parked and got out of the car, walking toward the elevator. Damn it, I’ve been calling this guy by the wrong name for four years. Fucking book—

“Clang! Clang! Clang...” The sound of metal scraping against concrete rang out. What?

“Who’s there?! Hello?” I waited a few seconds. “Come on! Say something! Don’t you know that’s exactly the kind of thing that freaks people out?!” I yelled. Chills, damn it.

“Clank! Clank! Clank...” echoing and fading away toward one of the far corners.

Fear. Fuck it, I’m late. I bolt for the elevator and ride it up to the factory lobby.

The doors open on a blast of light that makes me squint. Just get to Monica, say sorry, say hey, then go pretend I’m doing something with my life.

I cross the pale marble floor toward the counter. Monica sits behind it—blonde, hot, big glasses—stapling papers and bobbing her head to music from a little speaker beside her. Then she looks up. Christ. She’s looking at me. Fuck. Relax. Eye contact happens. Be cool.

“H-hey, Monica. How’s it… uh… going? Crazy day, huh? Storm and everything… like… uh…”

What the fuck is wrong with you, you retarded turkey? Stop. Just talk normally.

Monica smiles and raises an eyebrow. “You’re late, Dizzy. Fifth time this month.”

Holy shit, her eyebrows are doing things to me. Would she even be hot without them? Is that like a hot woman with no arms? Fuck. Nice. A hot woman with no legs. Wait—why—what’s wrong with me? Why would I rather date a woman with no limbs than one with no eyeb—

“Diz?” Monica asks, blinking.

“Sorry. I was thinking about eyebrows.”

“And that made you late…?”

What. Fuck me. Why did I tell her that?

“No, no—I got stuck in traffic, and I had the weirdest night of my whole entire life. Never gonna forget it.”

“Dizzy, you’re a special boy.” Monica pauses. “Oh, whatever. Everything’s a mess here anyway… I forgive you. For today. But from now on, you’re buying me things.” She smiles like she’s already spending my money.

What!!! Holy shit. Maybe her glasses are messing with her eyes and she thinks I’m loaded. Quick—tell her what you’re going to buy her. Show her you’re good for it! “I really do want to buy you all kinds of things. Like tools and… f-foot pegs. For bikes. What.”

Scared. Don’t care—I’m late. Bolt to elevator, ride up to plant lobby.

Bright light blinds as doors open. Just gotta see Monica, say sorry and hey, then go pretend I’m doing shit with my life.

Stride across shiny marble toward reception. There she is—blonde, bombshell, giant glasses. Stapling papers, head bobbing to music from her tiny speaker. Looks up at me. Ohmygod. Eye contact. Fuck. Chill. Happens sometimes. Be cool.

“Diz?” Monica blinks.

“Sorry was thinking about eyebrows.”

Fuck. “A chain. Of events.”

She bursts out laughing and claps a hand over her mouth. “Diz… I’d really love a chain of events.” I hope she’s flirting with me, not planning to douse my hair in kerosene and torch me while I sleep.

Shut up and stop staring at her already. I snap out of it.

She smiles. “You know being late five times means a talk with Ali, right?”

Fuck. Shit. “Y-yeah?”

“I won’t mark this one down, but maybe you should talk to him anyway. Are you okay?”

Definitely not. “Yeah,” I say. “Bye.” I turn and make a break for the elevator.

“Ding-dong!” goes one of the elevators. Gay. I press the button for the management floor, scope out the comfiest-looking spot, and lean against the wall. There’s a mirror to my right. I catch my own eye, hold it for a second, then look down.

Mom always said the most important thing in life was to look in the mirror every morning and every night before bed and be at peace with who and what I am. To be happy.

But I’m so fucking sick of this place. I’m suffocating.

My head tips back. I try to figure out how my life turned into this—too comfortable, too stuck, too empty.

Boom. Crash. Story time:

Noa, get him a drink so he’ll give it a rest.”

“Okay. Dana, you got the vodka? Ugh, the mat’s all sticky… Dizzy, who the hell are those guys? Friends of yours?”

The firelight picked out a group of people bearing down on us.

“No. Oved, did you invite them…?”

“I didn’t— I… I don’t know.”

“All your phones, now, before someone gets beaten half to death!”

“Mom!”—“Okay, take them! Just give them what they want!”—“Please, man. We haven’t done anything to you.”—“Don’t give them a fucking thing! Are you seriously going to hit a girl?” Voices all around me.

A foot landed on the mat—one step closer to Dana. She’d never learned when to keep her mouth shut. Then the other foot. A hand grabbed her by the face and squeezed hard. “It’d be a shame to ruin a pretty face like that…”

Firelight flickered across his face. Murder in his eyes.

“Oved! No!”

“Get off her, you son of a bitch!”

A shove. A body hit the sand. Three of them rushed at Oved and drove him into the mat. Feet slammed into his face. Kicks thudded into his ribs. Oved howled as they hauled him off the mat.

I froze.

Three more piled on, fists flying.

Matan and Itay scrambled up to stop them.

I couldn’t move.

The girls were screaming to my right, and it was ringing in my head. Matan and Itay were getting beaten too. And I still couldn’t move.

Dana sobbed, “Please! Please stop! Just take whatever you want!”

They dragged Matan toward the bonfire. Two of the gold-chain meatheads shoved his hand into the flames. I couldn’t take it in. None of it made sense.

I couldn’t.

They were… they were burning Matan’s hand… but… how…

My heart pounded. Adrenaline surged. My whole body shook. Matan’s screams and the girls’ shrieks ricocheted through my skull.

My thoughts cut out. A silence I’d never felt before.

Something inside me creaked open, like a valve rusted shut for years. I didn’t even know it was there.

Release. Discharge. Blinding blue light.

Boom. Boom. Boom. Electricity raced out of me, shattering bottles, then arced from one attacker to the next. They convulsed and glowed. My friends stumbled clear of the lightning.

A biot’s power usually shows up at puberty. Sometimes later. Often right after something big happens. Mine hit during summer break in eleventh grade.

They say the first time it hits you, it hits hardest. I don’t remember exactly what happened. Just waking up on the boardwalk, a blanket over me, police lights blinding me. A cop bought me an ice cream. I’d assumed he was a man. She wasn’t. I was mortified.

Two of those shit-for-brains didn’t come out of their comas until a few years later.

Electricity runs in the family (see chapter: The Backstory Dry Hump). I can shoot it out of my body. Like going “pffft,” only way cooler. My dad could do it, and his dad before him.

People like us—biots—mostly work at clean energy plants. A while after high school, someone from one of those plants came sniffing around for me and offered me a job. It’s a pretty sweet deal. Government job, good pay, an apartment thrown in, parties and drugs. I don’t know. I never really thought about what I was signing up for. My dad did it… my parents are pretty happy about it… I don’t know.

That’s it. Story time’s over. Done.

The elevator doors open. I make a beeline for the plant manager’s office, poke my head in, and catch the secretary’s eye.

“He’s free. You can go in. Name and department?”

Release. Surge. Blinding blue hell.

“CRACK! CRACK! CRACK!” Lightning forks between beer bottles before converging on the attackers. They spasm like broken puppets, glowing blue. My friends scramble back from the lightshow.

This shit usually kicks in during puberty—sometimes later—often triggered by trauma. Mine? Summer after junior year.

They say the first surge hits hardest. All I remember is waking up on the boardwalk wrapped in a blanket, cop lights strobing. One officer bought me ice cream—turned out to be a woman and I died of embarrassment.

Two of those dickbags woke from comas years later.

Electricity—that’s my gig (see: The Bullshitting Chapter). I can discharge it from my bod. Like blowing a fart, but with more sparkle.
Dad could do it. Grandpa too.

Folks like us—BIOTICS—usually end up at clean energy plants. They scooped me up right after high school. Gov job, decent paycheck, company housing, endless parties and drugs. Never really questioned the path. Dad walked it... parents seem content... whatever.

Aaaand scene. Storytime’s over.

Elevator doors wheeze open. I shuffle toward the manager’s office. Peek inside, nod at the secretary.

It usually starts in adolescence, sometimes later, but most often following a significant event. I had mine during the summer break of my junior year of high school.

They say the first time it hits you is simply the strongest. I don’t remember exactly what happened, only that I woke up on the boardwalk with a blanket over me and blinding police lights all around me. One cop bought me ice cream, and it turned out she was actually a female officer, and I felt embarrassed.

Two of those autistic guys woke up from their comas just a few years later.

Electricity—that’s my thing (see the chapter “Fucking with Your Mind”). I know how to discharge it from my body. It’s like going “poof,” only way cooler. That was my dad’s thing, and his dad’s too.

People like us, biots, usually work at a clean energy power plant. I, for example, was recruited to a plant like that a while after high school. It’s convenient—a government job, a decent salary, an apartment on their dime, parties, and drugs. I don’t know, I didn’t think too much about the consequences of going down this path. My dad did it... and my parents are pretty happy... I don’t know.

That’s it—storytime’s over. That’s all.

The elevator doors open. I walk toward the plant manager’s office. I peek inside and wave to the secretary.

“He’s available, you can come in. Name and department?”

“Dizzy. Electrical.”

She presses a button: “Let Dizzy from the Electrical Department in.”

  5. MisluktHet slang voor ‘zinloos gezeur’ werd “Fucking with Your Mind”, ofwel iemand in de war brengen
